When you think of Smash Mouth, you normally think of 2001’s instant classic of a film Shrek, but according to The Smashing Pumpkins‘ Billy Corgan, things could have been very different for the ogre-donkey duo.
As Exclaim reports, Corgan has used Instagram Stories’ new Questions feature to answer a question he received about Shrek by saying his band were once asked to be part of the soundtrack.
“SP fact: we were offered the end credit song for Shrek 1 but the offer was withdrawn and given to Smashmouth [sic] who had hit with Monkees song,” he said.

As we all know, Shrek‘s producers ended up going with Smash Mouth for the film’s opening and closing credits, but when asked which track the Pumpkins would have put forward had their offer not been withdrawn, Corgan answered with the song ‘Untitled’, which was to be their last song pre-breakup.

Smash Mouth later responded to Corgan’s comments on Twitter, saying, “Actually we said no and Michael Austin from Dreamworks kept calling. That went on for over a month. We assume multiple bands we’re asked.
“If it feeds Billy’s ego to think they we’re first let him think that. Def would have been a darker approach. @THE_EELS are on it & others.”

Here’s what Shrek‘s closing titles would have sounded like, had The Pumpkins made the cut…
…and here’s Smash Mouth’s rendition of The Monkees’ classic ‘I’m A Believer’ from the closing scenes of Shrek, because why not.
ICYMI: Smash Mouth will be returning to Australia this November for a meme-loving east coast tour, and we’re pretty sure Billy won’t be invited.
