The year is 2019, and somehow Billy Ray Cyrus has a part in the biggest song in the world right now. In fact, the song is so big that broke a streaming record set by stream king himself, Drake.
The song, ‘Old Town Road’ by 20-year-old Lil Nas X, caused quite a stir earlier this year when Billboard removed it from its Country charts, allegedly due to being more of a country-trap crossover and for not embracing “enough elements of today’s country music to chart in its current version.”
The internet was pretty outraged at this decision, and part of that outrage came from Billy Ray Cyrus. He would go on to lend his country music credibility to Nas X by hopping on a remix of the song. That remix has since become massive.
It is #1 on Billboard right now, #2 on ARIA and amassed an unbelievable 143 million streams in its opening week. According to Billboard, this has obliterated the previous opening week Spotify stream record set by Drake last year for his widely successful hit, ‘In My Feelings’.
