Birds Of Tokyo Are Working With Tool’s Producer For Their Next EP

Birds Of Tokyo frontman Ian Kenny has revealed the band are “on the cusp” of sharing new music from a forthcoming EP they recorded with legendary producer David Bottrill – of Tool, Muse and Silverchair fame.

Speaking to triple j, Kenny revealed the name of the mystery Tool/Muse producer the band teased in a January Facebook post. “David Bottrill’s mixed the EP … He’s done a really, really good job, so I’m very excited,” he said.

According to Kenny we won’t have to wait much longer to hear the outcome of their work together. “I’ve just flown into L.A. today – I’ve got to spend a week here shooting the next clip for Birds of Tokyo,” he said. “[We’ve] just finished writing and recording an EP and we shoot the clip in the next days for the lead single…that comes out in May, I think.”

The EP will follow up Bird Of Tokyo’s 2013 hot album March Fires and while not a full-length album, the EP will act as taste of new Birds music, with Kenny saying the band are “going to get together and write the next record mid this year or the end of this year.”

Before all that though, Kenny will be busy with his other project, Karnivool, who are about to kick off their national Themata anniversary tour. They will be traversing the country playing their debut Themata right through, as well as some added fan favourites and some other rarely-heard album and EP cuts.

“There’s a couple tracks off EPs and covers from around the time and some rare stuff that we haven’t played that might fit in,” said Kenny. “One thing that we’re very aware of these days: that Themata had an impact on a lot of people and it’s important to a lot of people so we’d love to go out and pay respect to that and take the record to the stage.”

Kenny also told triple j the West-Australian band have also already begun work on a follow-up to their 2013 record Asymmetry.

“We’re writing bits and pieces at the moment for some songs that ideally will shape what we do next; haven’t got the songs together yet but we’ve started writing.” Kenny reiterated that things are still in the early stage and the band haven’t quite yet settled on a direction for the new record.

“I’d love to say exactly what it’s going to be but I can’t right now.” Karnivool’s Themata anniversary tour starts on Thursday 30th April.

Birds of Tokyo will also play Northern Territory’s upcoming Bassinthegrass festival this May.
