Birds Of Tokyo Share ‘Smith Street’, An Ode To The Melbourne Locale

Currently aboard the SummerSalt festival tour, Birds of Tokyo have released their first single of 2022. The track, ‘Smith Street’, gets its name from Smith Street, Collingwood, a popular late-night and brunch-time destination for Melburnians young and old.

“I guess every town has a Smith Street”, vocalist Ian Kenny said in a statement. “We’ve had a few big nights in those Collingwood pubs over the years.” Kenny wrote ‘Smith Street’ with guitarist Adam Spark, drummer Adam Weston, keyboard player Glenn Sarangapany and bassist Ian Berney as a means of celebrating the reopening of venues across the country.

“Obviously, the last couple of years have been incredibly difficult, particularly for Victorians,” said Kenny, “but now it looks like it’s finally OK for them to go out and celebrate with friends again. This song is meant to be a soundtrack for that experience that so many people have been missing.”

Birds of Tokyo’s latest album, Human Design, came out in April 2020. The singles ‘Good Lord’ and ‘Two Of Us’ both gained ARIA Platinum accreditation. The band followed Human Design with a couple of standalone singles; ‘Weekend’ in late 2020 and ‘Superglue’ feat. Stand Atlantic in September 2021.

Birds of Tokyo are playing SummerSalt in Mildura, Saturday, 26th March; St Kilda, Sunday, 27th March; and Fremantle, Sunday, 1st May. The event lineup also features Missy Higgins, Xavier Rudd, The Waifs and John Butler (St Kilda and Mildura only).
