Despite mixed reviews for their 2016 album Hymns (the first since the exits of longtime drummer Matt Tong and bassist Gordon Moakes), Bloc Party are pushing onwards with their second incarnation, and now they’ve released a new song titled Stunt Queen.
The new track was released overnight, following a day of teasing fans on social media, and it’s the first tune that was written and recorded by all four of the band’s current members (new drummer Louise Bartle didn’t record on Hymns). It’s also the band’s first new material since the release of Hymns.
According to a statement by the band, Bloc Party came up with the concept behind Stunt Queen while on tour in Australia.
“Stunt Queen has its genesis in an idea that dates back to the Australian tour we did at the start of 2016. It was an idea that we worked on at sound checks and was one of the first ideas to come along after Justin and Louise joined the band,” Bloc Party say.
“Playing the Hollywood Bowl feels like a significant milestone for the band, and we wanted to mark it with a new release. We’re excited to be playing our biggest ever headline gig in the U.S. and releasing new material in the same week.”
