Bob Dylan Re-Records ‘Blowin’ In The Wind’ With New Analogue Recording Format

Bob Dylan has re-recorded his 1963 classic ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ for the first time since the original version that appeared on The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.

It will be released physically as the debut Ionic Original, a new high-quality analogue recording format developed by producer and musician T Bone Burnett, who rose to fame touring as Dylan’s guitarist in his backing band, and who produced the new version of ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’.

The unique, one-of-a-kind disc will go up for auction through Christie’s in London on Thursday, 7th July, with an estimated bidding price of between £600,000 to £1,000,000 – around $1,064,760 to $1,775,300 Australian dollars – so it’s pretty strictly for diehard Dylan fans or audio recording nerds.

“Sixty years after Bob first wrote and recorded ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’, he is giving us a new recording of his song,” Burnett commented in a press release. “One that is both deeply relevant for our times and resonant with decades of the artist’s life and experience. We’re grateful to Christie’s for their belief in the ‘Ionic Original’ and for presenting Bob’s masterful recording to the world in a unique and meaningful way.”

Last month, when Burnett announced his new Ionic Originals format, the hardcore analogue recording enthusiast called it “the pinnacle of recorded sound”. As he explained at the time, Ionic Originals are “lacquer painted onto an aluminium disc, with a spiral etched into it by music.”

He continued: “Analogue sound has more depth, more harmonic complexity, more resonance, better imaging. Analogue has more feel, more character, more touch. Digital sound is frozen. Analogue sound is alive.”
