Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon Backs Lorde & Kendrick, Calls The Grammys A “Shit Show”

Bon Iver mastermind Justin Vernon has hit out at the Grammy Awards after yesterday’s ceremony, which ended in Bruno Mars winning all six awards he was nominated for, including Song, Record and Album Of The Year.

“Absolutely NO offense to Mr Mars, but you absolutely have to be shitting me,” Vernon wrote in a series of tweets criticising the Grammys.

“To be factual, Mr Mars made a name in the INDUSTRY by making hits OUT of hits of yesteryear,” he continued, before telling SZA (who didn’t win anything) and Kendrick Lamar (who lost Album Of The Year for the third time) to “move on from this shit show”.

It seems he’s got a problem with the show in general as well, reminding people, “The Grammies [sic] are for the music Industry. Music, itself, is for everywhere else and everyone else.”

He’s also sided with Lorde after she was reportedly denied the chance to perform solo, despite being nominated in the night’s penultimate category, Album Of The Year.

When asked whether it was a mistake to not include Lorde, Grammy producer Ken Ehrlich said (via Variety), “We have a box and it gets full. She had a great album. There’s no way we can really deal with everybody.”

Vernon responded by calling Ehrlich “a dick producer” and recalling the time he was supposedly denied a performance of his song ‘Holocene’, which was nominated for Song and Record Of The Year in 2011.

“Ken told us ‘Holocene’ (roty, soty nominee in 2011 (?)) was ‘too long and slow and that we’d lose 4-6 million viewers cause of that’ – and that he’s broken a lot of careers on the show, so I should listen,” Vernon wrote.

Bon Iver have won two Grammys in the past, but they lost the award for Best Alternative Album to The National this year.

Fleet Foxes‘ frontman Robin Pecknold, who has also been nominated for a Grammy, had a scathing review of the awards and Mars’ wins as well, writing on his Instagram story, “Aside from Kendrick / SZA / Jay Z nothing that was nominated was very good in my opinion, but to give it all to Toys R Us Gap Band is pretty ridic.”
