Earlier this week, Britney Spears asked a court to not allow her father to regain conservatorship over her. It follows his holding of the conservatorship from 2008, where fans and leaders of the #FreeBritney movement suspect there to be foul play.
Britney Spears asked for her care manager to permanently replace her father in the conservator role. However, Reuters reports that the current arrangement has now been extended through to February 2021.
Spears’ father has overseen essentially every aspect of her life since 2008. In 2019, he stepped back from the role due to his own health concerns and a professional conservator – Jodi Montgomery – took over the role in a temporary capacity.
Prior to this week’s hearing, Spears’ lawyer submitted documents that stated she was “strongly opposed” to having her father return to the conservatorship.
Consequence of Sound reports that she petitioned the court as a reflection of the “major change in her current lifestyle”. While they also say she accused her father, Jamie Spears of committing her to a mental health facility against her will and of altering her medication.
TMZ reports that the court needs additional documents to be filed in support of Britney’s case before the court will consider her request.
Britney Spears’ father has held control over most aspects of her life since 2008, following her public mental health battle. Jamie Spears has previously denied the allegations from the #FreeBritney movement.
“All these conspiracy theorists don’t know anything. The world don’t have a clue,” he told Page Six. “It’s up to the court of California to decide what’s best for my daughter. It’s no one else’s business.”
Britney Spears’ conservatorship will remain in place for at least another six months.
