A new tribute album devoted to the great Buddy Holly is set to feature some big-name fans of the bespectacled rock ‘n’ roller.
Spinner reports that the likes of Sir Paul McCartney, Lou Reed, My Morning Jacket and Cee-Lo Green will make contributions to Rave On Buddy Holly, a 19-track album set for a US release of June 28.
The collection will apparently not feature straightforward reinterpretations of Holly’s classic songs, with artists distorting the originals with their own style. Florence and the Machine‘s take on Not Fade Away will “bring an industrial New Orleans vibe”, while Modest Mouse on That’ll Be The Day are, it seems, ‘avant-garde’.
Others on board for the project are Julian Casablancas (Rave On), Lou Reed (Peggy Sue), Paul McCartney (It’s So Easy), My Morning Jacket (True Love Ways), Patti Smith (Words Of Love) and the Black Keys (Dearest). Cee-Lo Green has a go at (You’re So Square) Baby, I Don’t Care.

Holly died at the mere age of 22 in a plane crash in 1959 that also took out the Big Bopper and Richie Valens.
McCartney has form in covering Holly’s songs, what with him being a favourite of the Beatles in their early days performing at the Cavern Club in Liverpool.
