Melbourne electronica champ Chet Faker is set to dominate this year’s ARIA Awards with the musician and producer scoring a grand total of nine nominations, and has already picked up three Fine Arts and Artisan awards.
The winners of the 2014 ARIA Artisan and Fine Arts Awards have been announced at an ARIA event at the Art Gallery Of New South Wales in Sydney this morning, where Faker’s debut album Built on Glass won Producer Of The Year, Engineer Of The Year and Best Cover Art. He also picked up an extra six music nominations.
This is the first time an artist has swept all three Artisan Award categories since Silverchair’s Diorama in 2002. Now Faker, who is signed to independent label Future Classic, is in the running for Album Of The Year, Best Male Artist, Breakthrough Artist, Best Independent Release, Best Video for Talk Is Cheap and stands beside label mate Flume for their single Drop The Game in the Best Dance Release category.
Following close behind Faker with seven ARIA Award nominations is Brisbane band Sheppard, who have enjoyed a stellar year following the success of their single Geronimo and the album Bombs Away. They are up for Album Of The Year, Best Independent Release, Best Pop Release, Producer Of The Year and Geronimo is nominated in the publicly-voted categories of Song Of The Year and Best Video.
Previous ARIA Award winning artist Dan Sultan is also high on the nominations list with his latest album Blackbird. He will battle it out in five categories including Album Of The Year, Best Male Artist, Best Rock Album and Best Independent Release as well as a nomination in the publicly- voted category of Best Australian Live Act, thanks to his tenure as support for Bruce Springsteen on his Australian Tour and selling out his own national tour earlier this year.
This year’s nominations have demonstrated the strength of Australia’s independent labels in the current music landscape. Critically-acclaimed songwriter and hit-maker Sia, who is signed to independent label Inertia, also claimed a total of 6 nominations thanks to her latest studio album 1000 Forms of Fear.
Other international success stories like Iggy Azalea and 5 Seconds of Summer have also received nominations. Dan Rosen, ARIA chief executive officer, said 2014 had been a remarkable year “for Australian artists both at home and across the globe”.
As well as the Artisan award winners and ARIA music nominations, ARIA also announced the winners for the recently Fine Arts awards. These included awards for Best Classical Album, which was taken by Lior and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and Best Original Soundtrack, won by Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
Meanwhile, Australian musician and composer, Joseph Tawadros, has taken out the rare ARIA hat-trick, winning his third ARIA in three years, with Permission to Evaporate named Best World Music Album.
The 28th Annual ARIA Awards will take place on Wednesday, 26th November 2014, returning to the Event Centre at The Star in Sydney. See all the Fine Arts and Artisan winners and the other nominations below.
