Chet Faker Reveals ‘Built On Glass’ Debut LP Details, New Single & Video ‘Talk Is Cheap’

Melbourne-based down-tempo producer Nick Murphy, aka Chet Faker, has revealed the details of his highly anticipated debut album, titled Built On Glass.

Following on from his well-received 2012 EP Thinking In Textures, Built on Glass will be released through Future Classic on 11th April, 2014. The album was recorded and produced by Chet Faker in his home studio in North Melbourne over a two year period, and meshes his effortless RnB vocals and pop melodies with the intricate beats of house and disco.

Of the record’s production behind the record, he says, “Honesty is a big part of the record. I recorded with easily affordable equipment, the budget was tiny. It’s the first time I’ve ever worked on a full length and I felt like hi-fidelity wasn’t something to strive for working in a room on my own.” Lyrically speaking, Faker admits, “I wanted to explore how my life directly affected my music – that’s the glass, I guess.”

Faker has also debuted brand-new single Talk Is Cheap along with its compelling music video (below). Directed by Toby & Pete, the clip has Chet emerging from a bed of ice, the song’s minimal percussion and background saxophone drawing him out into warmer green foliage.

The album also features previous single Melt, a simmering, synth-wobbled duet with Brooklyn singer Kilo Kish which was released in August last year, as well as 11 other new tracks.

Murphy revealed last week that he had recorded and rejected two previous albums before coming to the final version of Built On Glass. “Maybe I’ve overcooked it and thought about it too much,” he told triple j. “I thought it was finished and then I deleted everything and started again. I did that twice. I wrote like three albums for one album.”

Murphy has been uber-busy since the release of Thinking In Textures in 2012, selling out shows across Australia, the US, UK and Europe, and playing festival slots including for Laneway Festival, Splendour In The Grass, Falls Festival and Field Day.

He also recently teamed up with young EDM phenom Flume late last year for the collaborative Lockjaw EP. The release’s first single Drop the Game was certified Gold within weeks of its release and polled at #5 in the 2014 triple j Hottest 100. Melt featuring Kilo Kish came in at #65.
