The recent announcement of an upcoming Chris Cornell biopic in the works triggered plenty of excitement from fans, but it seems the movie is probably not going to be the one we deserve.
A rep from the late Soundgarden legend’s estate has publicly slammed the project, issuing a statement to Pitchfork saying it’s “not sanctioned or approved by the estate”.
The rep also added that “No one contacted the estate for any information” for the film, which is — you know — concerning.
Despite the grunge icon’s long & storied career fronting a number of iconic bands including Soundgarden, Audioslave and supergroup Temple Of The Dog, the biopic will apparently only focus on the last days of Cornell’s life, in the lead-up to his heartbreaking suicide in 2017.
A post for Black Days on the casting call website Backstage reveals that production on the movie is already underway, with shooting kicking off in LA next month. It’s being helmed by Road Rage Films LLC and Amerifilms LLC — which are apparently run by actor and musician Johnny Holiday, who is also listed to star (Holiday’s CV also includes the Academy Award-winning Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line).
That’s pretty much all we know about the project so far, and we’ll bring you more info as it develops. But for now, we’re inclined to hold out for a biopic that treats Cornell’s story with the care and dedication it deserves.
