Chvrches have announced their fourth studio album Screen Violence will arrive on Friday, 27th August, sharing a new single featuring the Cure‘s Robert Smith to coincide.
The follow-up to 2018’s Love Is Dead was largely recorded remotely across Los Angeles and Glasgow, with the band’s Lauren Mayberry, Martin Doherty and Iain Cook self-producing and mixing the record via video calls and audio sharing programs.
“I think for me it was helpful to go into the process with the idea that I could write something escapist almost,” explained Mayberry in a statement. “That felt freeing initially, to have concepts and stories to weave your own feelings and experiences through but in the end, all the lyrics were definitely still personal.”
Doherty says to him, the “screen” aspect was more literal. “When we were making the record, it was like half of our lives were lived through screens. What began as a concept was now a lifeline.”
New single ‘How Not to Drown’ is the second to be lifted from Screen Violence, after the trio returned with ‘He Said She Said’ back in April. The brooding cut is driven by hard piano chords and propulsive rhythms, bolstering Mayberry and Smith’s distinctive vocals as they trade verses.
