Outspoken Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor has made his feelings known about some of today’s biggest pop stars, specifically addressing the careers of Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber.
In an interview with The Guardian Taylor spoke about the difficulty that comes with making it in the music industry in the age of steaming, and said he couldn’t be happier for how well Ed Sheeran is doing.
“I’m stoked for people like Ed Sheeran – that kid worked his ass off, so why shouldn’t he get the recognition?” said Taylor.
“But at the same time when his songs dominated [the charts] because of streaming, where is the fairness? What about the other artists who worked their asses off, but maybe didn’t have a million streams?”
Taylor later bemoaned the way that metal culture has been appropriated in mainstream and fashion culture, specifically lining up Justin Bieber. “Oh, but Justin Bieber’s line in pseudo-metal T-shirts? He can kiss my ass,” he said.
Last year Bieber caused a stir when he started hocking shirts with Marilyn Manson’s face on them and “Bigger than Satan… Bieber” on the back.
