According to drummer Lars Ulrich, “Wait and see.”
You might remember Metallica‘s covers album Garage Inc., originally released in 1998; the record gave fans an insight into the music that inspired the band, a much more expansive release than their initial 1984 EP, The $5.98 EP: Garage Days Re-Revisited. Now though, 21 years on from the release of Garage Inc., another covers album from Metallica could well be in the works.
In an interview with Kerrang!, Ulrich answered fan questions, to which he offered the pointed to one about the possibility of another instalment of their covers series. It would make sense if another Garage Inc. style album were to come out, this far on from its predecessor – with the amount of anniversary tours and re-issues, a project like this would fall perfectly in line.
The original Garage Inc. featured covers of songs from the likes of Black Sabbath and Bob Seger, not to mention a now beloved rendition of traditional Irish song, ‘Whiskey in the Jar’.
A follow up to Metallica’s Hardwired…To Self-Destruct is still up in the air, with Kirk Hammett telling Mixdown this April that there’s tons of new material ready and waiting to be laid down on track. In the meantime though, Metallica are of course going to be back on Australian shores with Slipknot this October – perhaps we’ll be treated to some surprises on that run.
