Cut Copy have a new song called Free Your Mind, but you can only hear it if you’re at one of six remote geographical locations around the world with access to a smartphone or laptop.
To hear the track, fans have been told to make the “journey” to any of a given set of coordinates (below), where they’ll find a ‘Free Your Mind’ billboard. Once you’re at your destination, open up cutcopy.net and make sure Location Services and audio are on. That’s it, apparently.
Most of the coordinates correspond to rural places. The Australian one leads to the town of Moora, WA, which sits about two hours north of Perth, whilst the UK one marks the small town of Blaina in South Wales. So it looks like hardcore fans have some driving to do.
This overly-exclusive release strategy is only fitting, with the band debuting another single, Let Me Show You, by selling only 120 vinyl pressings of it at this year’s Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago.
It seems like the only logical step would be for the band’s next single to be released in an even more obscure way. Say, maybe recorded onto a Betamax tape, and then encased in ice and sent into orbit around the earth. Flaming Lips, eat your heart out.
The band’s last full-length, Zonoscope, dropped way back in 2011, so it appears that they’ve been working on some new material. If only we could hear it.
