While Damon Albarn is gearing up for the release of his first solo record Everyday Robots and its subsequent tour, the frontman has opened up about his other projects, saying that new material for Blur and Gorillaz are unlikely to be finished anytime soon.
Blur reunited in 2008 but haven’t released a new album since 2003’s Think Tank, though Albarn admits they have attempted to cut some tracks in recent years. “There is material,” he told Rolling Stone. “But I can’t foresee us in the near future being in a position to finish it. We’re just all doing other stuff.”
Blur wrapped up a long world tour this January, which famously excluded their previously scheduled Australian dates, and despite rumours, Albarn said the band have no plans for the foreseeable future. “I just haven’t got the time,” he said. “We put in a good shift last year and played a lot of gigs around the world. Everyone’s off doing other stuff at the moment.”
Albarn stopped short of proclaiming any kind of hiatus for the Britpopers. “It’s a big part of my life,” he said. “I’ll never abandon the spirit of it ever. It’s kind of in me.” The multi-talented musician held similar sentiments for his other project, Gorillaz, though he did revel he plans on playing some Gorillaz tracks while on his solo tour.
“Apart from the visuals, I am Gorillaz,” said Albarn. “There’s no difference, really,” he added. “It’s a bit embarrassing for me to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ about stuff that’s my stuff anyway. I just don’t see it like that. I’ve been playing Gorillaz songs in rehearsal and some of them sound really fresh, so I’ll definitely be playing them on my tour.”
