The winners for the 2014 Age Music Victoria Public Awards are in. The big victors of the night were Dan Sultan and Courtney Barnett, who took home Best Male Artist and Best Female Artist, respectively.
Sultan beat stiff competition in Chet Faker and Vance Joy to take the Best Male Artist gong, while also picking up Best Album behind highly praised record Blackbird. Barnett also snatched a $2,500 cash prize for Best Song with top-notch track Avant Gardener.
Best Band went to Carlton psychedelic heroes King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, while Melbourne rapper Remi, who last month won a $50K grant at the Carlton Dry AIR Independent Music Awards, grabbed Best Emerging Artist. The award comes with a free trip to next year’s BigSound in Brisbane and a set at the conference’s showcase.
Other notable winners include Saskwatch for Best Live Band and Meredith Music Festival, winning Best Festival for the second year running. Ceremony highlights included 70s rock band Daddy Cool playing a greatest hit set, performances from Davey Lane, Stonefield, and Sultan, and rock journalist and historian Ed Nimmervoll’s induction into the Hall of Fame by Russell Morris.
