After the incredible buzz surrounding the announcement of Daniel Johnston’s first ever tour of Australia as part of the 2010 Laneway Festival, and the release of his first new album in 8 years – Is and Always Was – punters in Melbourne and Sydney now have a very special opportunity to witness a headline show by one of the worlds most written about and enigmatic performers.
In between his Laneway Festival Performances, Daniel Johnston will play one-off headline shows in Melbourne at the Prince of Wales on Wednesday 3rd February and Sydney’s Metro Theatre on Thursday 4th February. Daniel’s live set consists of a stunningly fragile solo set, acoustic numbers and a full rocking band performance. Known for selecting existing bands to tour as his ‘backing band’, Daniel has invited Australia’s Old Man River to join him on stage across the Laneway Festival run and at these special side shows.
Daniel’s beautiful but broken songs about girls, movie monsters and teen superheroes have enthralled the likes of Kurt Cobain, Thurston Moore and Matt Groening since the 80’s when he recorded and hand delivered cassette copies of albums to his fans, one-by-one. In a live capacity Daniel Johnston’s power to connect at the rawest of levels is almost spooky.
Tickets are on sale now. Be sure to be part of what will undoubtedly become one of Australia’s most talked about concert experiences.
