Whether it’s opening up about depression, or admitting he once trolled Christopher Walken, Foo Fighters founder Dave Grohl is so well-loved thanks largely to how relatable he is to the average Joe.
As it turns out he once accidentally had way too many cups of Joe and ended up in hospital with a caffeine overdose.
As Ultimate Guitar points out, Grohl recently spoke about his love for coffee in an interview with Beats 1, and admitted he once drank way too much of the black stuff.
The incident occurred in 2009 when he was writing the Them Crooked Vultures album. “I actually had to go to a hospital once for drinking coffee,” he admitted.
“I was sleeping four hours a night, I was drinking three pots of coffee a day,” he continues, “and I started having fucking chest pains. I just turned 40, and I was like, ‘Of course I’m gonna die, I’m 40!’
Despite the chest pains, Grohl went ahead and played an upcoming gig at the White House on the 4th of July.
“I figured if I have the heart attack, it’s a great place to have it! I’ll be fine!” he said. “So we do it, and I come home and call my doctor. ‘I’m having chest pains.’ And he’s like ‘Are you having them right now?’ ‘Yeah, kinda.’ He goes, ‘Get in here!’
After having Grohl go for an MRI scan his doctor gave him a strange solution. “He says, ‘Lay back on the coffee, play drums three or four days a week, and have a glass of red wine before bed.’ That was his prescription! And I did! And look at me now! It worked like a fucking charm!”
You can catch Dave and the rest of the Fooeys in Australia next January, when they’ll play shows across the country with their good mates Weezer.
