Former Nirvana drummer and current Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has opened up about the hug with Courtney Love, the widow of late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, which took place during Nirvana’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April.
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Grohl has revealed the personal side of the event, and how the “bumpy past” of the Nirvana family has been left behind.
“You know, the wonderful thing about [the induction] was the personal side of it,” he says. “It was the Hall of Fame ceremony, but it meant so much to all of us personally that sometimes you forgot about the other stuff — like the arena and the trophy — and focused on real, personal things.”
Grohl mentions that he saw Courtney Love that night prior to Nirvana making their induction speech. “I saw Courtney walking past, and I just tapped her on the shoulder and we looked at each other in the eyes and that was it — we’re just family,” he recounts. “We’ve had a rocky road. We’ve had a bumpy past, but at the end of the day we’re a big family and when we hugged each other it was a real hug.”
The enormity of the hug, given past indiscretions between Love and the band following Cobain’s suicide in 1994, clearly set in as the band left the stage. “And after we walked off stage, we just walked down the hallway together, it was almost like no time had passed at all,” Grohl says.
“Those things are real and no matter what it looks like in a magazine or on a website. That’s real shit and I was very, very happy that we had those moments. It was beautiful.”
Grohl also revealed in the interview that the Foo Fighters filmed their recent New Orleans “secret-gig” escapade, so it may see an official release down the track, possibly on Grohl’s forthcoming HBO series Sonic Highways. “I don’t know what we’ll do,” Grohl said, before adding, “We did film it and it’s f—in’ amazing.”
