Dave Grohl’s Insane 23-Minute Debut Solo Track & Mini Doco ‘Play’ Is Here!

Dave Grohl has officially unleashed his first ever solo track, and of course it’s a 23-minute multi-instrumental odyssey.

Dubbed ‘Play’, the single’s recording process saw Dave record each instrument live in a single take (which means he had to start all over again from the top if he f*cked up) and he’s dropped a matching music video of the whole process to prove it.

The marathon musical masterpiece is part of a mini documentary directed by the head Foo Fighter, also dubbed Play, which celebrates “the rewards and challenges of dedicating one’s life to playing music”.

The video kicks off with narrated BTS footage before pivoting into Grohl’s 23-minute one-man-band endurance session.

Explaining the motivation behind the song, the dad rocker says, “Watching my kids start to play music and learn to sing or play drums, it brings me back to the time when I was their age listening to albums, learning from listening… and when I take my kids to the place where they take their lessons, I see these rooms full of children that are really pushing themselves to figure this out.

“And even now, as a 49-year-old man, I’m still trying to figure it out… it’s not something that you ever truly master. You’re always chasing the next challenge, and you’re always trying to find a way to improve on what you’ve learned.”

ICYMI: Dave’s 12-year-old daughter Violet has been appearing onstage at some of Foo Fighters’ North American tour dates to perform backing vox with her old man of late.

You can watch Play below or head here for a more interactive experience of the video or else to download the sheet music or access a “growing directory of organisations who support music education”.

Play will also receive a limited edition vinyl release on 28th September.
