Dave Le’aupepe Reckons Gang Of Youths’ New Music Might Polarise Fans

The time has come. Gang Of Youths have finally returned with the release of their latest single ‘The Angel of 8th Ave.’ However, in a new interview, frontman Dave Le’aupepe reckons that what they’ve got coming might divide their ever-growing fanbase.

Speaking to triple J earlier this morning, Le’aupepe revealed that ‘The Angel of 8th Ave.’ is the only song on the band’s highly anticipated forthcoming third album that sounds like their work on 2015’s The Positions or 2017’s Go Farther In Lightness.

“This is probably the only song that sounds anything like what we used to do, if I’m honest,” Le’aupepe said, speaking of the new single.

“That’s probably by design. I think we just needed people to hear something initially that was a reminder of what we were… before we took them on this journey that could be polarising, that uses a lot more breadth of musicality and eclecticism as opposed to what we were known for about 6-7 years.”

Le’aupepe also confirmed that the band’s “extremely different” next album would arrive “at some point in the next year or so”.

However, he later said, “I’m probably not the best judge of how different it is.

“It could be basically identical and I’ve just fussed over the minutiae so much it’s destroyed my objectivity.”

Elsewhere in the interview, he discusses the passing of his father and the move to London – both of which are referenced in ‘The Angel Of 8th Ave. – as well as how he reckons he’s not a great singer (???).
