The late David Bowie has secured his place in Australian music history by breaking an ARIA Chart record set by Michael Jackson, while also debuting at number one on the albums chart with his final studio album, Blackstar.
This week’s top 100 albums on the ARIA Chart features a whopping 17 entries from Bowie, including album’s like his Best Of Bowie, The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars, The Next Day and Aladdin Sane.
With 17 entries in the top 100, Bowie surpasses the record of 14 which was set by Michael Jackson shortly after his death in July 2009. With that in mind, Bowie now holds the ARIA Charts record for the most albums in the top 100 by a single artist. Pretty jaw-dropping hey?
Blackstar, released on Bowie’s 69th birthday just two days before his tragic passing, has seen its sales spike in a pretty big way, giving the musician his first-ever number one on the ARIA Charts as well — not including his albums Scary Monsters and Let’s Dance, which were number one albums before the ARIA Charts began in July 1983.
In making number one, Bowie has beat the likes of Adele and Justin Bieber, whose latest albums have also been mega-popular.
On this week’s singles chart, Bowie’s Queen collaboration Under Pressure and his songs Space Oddity and Heroes have all re-entered the top 50, with another five tracks making the top 100, including Starman and Let’s Dance.
