Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has revealed the late David Bowie once turned down his request for a collaboration because the project he was working on wasn’t Bowie’s “thing”.
Touring some of Bowie’s fave spots in Los Angeles with band-mate Pat Smear for Playboy this week, Grohl says he once asked his fellow David to sing on a song he was writing for a movie. Bowie’s response to Grohl’s request was, supposedly, “David, I watched the movie and I got to be honest, it’s not my thing… I’m not made for these times.”
Footage of Grohl and Smear’s tour of Bowie’s LA haunts (below) sees Grohl remember the very moment that Bowie turned him down, which apparently happened about two years ago.
“I got approached by this movie to do a song for the movie, so I thought, ‘Maybe I’ll have someone else sing. I’ll do the music and then have another vocalist.’ And I thought, ‘Maybe I’ll ask and see if David would do it,'” Grohl says.
“So the next day I get an email and it says, ‘David, I watched the movie and I got to be honest, it’s not my thing.’ He said, ‘I’m not made for these times. So thanks, but I think I’m gonna sit this one out.'”
Grohl says that after thanking Bowie, he received another reply, which read, “Alright, well that’s settled then. Now, fuck off,” which left him unsure if Bowie was kidding around or not.
So, Grohl says he replied saying that he’ll see Bowie again in 16 years at his next birthday concert, to which Bowie allegedly replied, “Don’t hold your breath… No more birthdays, I’ve run out of them.” Bowie died in January this year, aged 69.
Bowie’s line of rejected collaborations also include mulitple proposed hook-ups with The Red Hot Chili Peppers and the time Bowie knocked back Coldplay because their song was, well, a bit shit.
Grohl and the other surviving Nirvana members Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear joined forces with Beck earlier this week to cover Bowie’s The Man Who Sold The World at a pre-Grammy Awards gala.
