David Bowie‘s body has been cremated in New York according to reports coming out of the UK.
The Guardian is reporting that he was secretly cremated without any friends or family present which were his wishes.
Bowie died after an 18 month battle with cancer at the age of 69 on Sunday and The Guardian is further reporting that the cremation took place soon after.
“There is no public or private service or a public memorial. There is nothing,” a source told The Daily Mirror.
A US source further said that, “In many respects you don’t need a memorial or service to remember David by…you have his music instead.”
“His last album Blackstar was very much his goodbye to fans instead.”
It’s a sentiment echoed by the producer of Blackstar Tony Visconti who called the record a “parting gift,” to his fans.
Bowie made little fuss at all about his illness during his 18 month battle. Only a select few people knew that he was ill including Visconti and theatre director Ivo Van Hoe who worked on Bowie’s stage musical Lazarus.
Blackstar looks set to debut at number in many parts of the world this week including Australia, the US and the UK.
