French DJ and producer Daivd Guetta has revealed that a technical meltdown moments before his Coachella set this year forced him to play the “old school” way.
No, he doesn’t mean with vinyl nor does he even mean with CDs. According to Guetta, he had to DJ with tracks in a random order on a USB.
In an interview with Beatport the mega-DJ described the incident that occured on weekend one of Coachella.
“I’m using Rekordbox and Pioneer to play,” said Guetta, “And before I saved my playlist to my SD card, my computer crashed. So I just had to put all my music in a random order on USB sticks at the last minute, doing it really old school, scrolling to look for the records I wanted to play next.”
Things just continued to more complicated for the DJ when The Black Eyed Peas decided they would make a last-minute appearance during his set to perform the Guetta-produced I Gotta Feeling. “When Fergie decided to come last minute, it was like, ‘OK, but I don’t have I Gotta Feeling, because I don’t play it anymore’,” Guetta said.
“I called my stage manager to go download I Gotta Feeling on iTunes so I could play it. It was just completely crazy, but I loved it.”
In a fan-filmed video (below), you can even hear the Frenchman announcing to the crowd that his stage manager is “downloading some of his records so he can play them.”
Luckily he was better prepared for weekend two when Nicki Minaj joined him on stage to perform his most recent single Hey Mama.
