Canadian punk rock duo Death From Above 1979 have returned with a surprise new single called ‘Freeze Me’, and they’ve also dropped the ‘1979’ suffix from their name.
Death From Above’s new song (which you can stream below) was premiered on BBC Radio 1, with the duo confirming to host MistaJam that “it will not be 10 years” before they release their next album.
Death From Above released their latest album The Physical World in 2014, 10 years after their debut, You’re A Woman, I’m A Machine. In 2016 the band released the live album Live At Third Man Records.
A representative for the band has also told Consequence Of Sound that the duo will now go by the name Death From Above, but their social media accounts will keep their old name for some reason. All future music releases and tours will drop the ‘1979’.
Death From Above originally added the ‘1979’ to their name after James Murphy’s record label Death From Above Records filed a cease and desist against the duo, who eventually added the legal minimum amount of numbers to their name in order to be able to keep the first part of their moniker.
