A Neil Young t-shirt worn by man discovered deceased in a disused northern Victorian mine could be vital clue Police have said.
The shirt was from Young’s 2009 Australian tour, and may help Police identify the man. Found in the Balaclava Mine area at Whroo, near Shepparton, at about 1.30pm on Saturday, the man is described as Caucasian, between 176-183cm tall, over 50. He also had a full upper denture and no upper or lower teeth.
So far being treated as suspicious, there was no statement made as to the cause of death, however, reports Herald Sun, Homicide Squad Detective Inspector Mick Hughes said police believed the body was dropped into one of the entrances of the mineshaft.
“It was a significant piece of work for us to uncover the body. The way we had to uncover it was not the way the body went into the mineshaft… I would say it’s been dropped into one of the entrances and slid to where we found it.
“There’s information about the investigation we can’t talk about but it’s fair to say that (from) the location where the body was found, the body was wrapped in a tarpaulin… we are investigating as a homicide.
“The time of death and placement is unknown to us at this stage – we could be talking weeks and we could be talking months. I think you would have to have knowledge of the mine.”
Police are urging are anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with detectives hoping that the t-shirt might provide a break in the case.
