American singer-songwriter Erykah Badu has accused the recently reformed Black Eyed Peas of copying the music video for her 2007 song Honey, in their new clip for Yesterday.
Taking to Twitter, Badu has said, “I think THE BLACK EYE PEAS borrowed my idea a Lil lol.”
And she’s right — the video for Yesterday, which marks the return of The Black Eyed Peas after a four-year hiatus, sees band members Will.i.am, Taboo and apl.de.ap (but not Fergie) browsing through some classic albums in a record store as the cover art comes to life, with the Peas taking place of the original artists.
Badu’s video for Honey has a very similar concept, and some of the albums shown in The Black Eyed Peas’ clip are also seen in Badu’s clip, including De La Soul’s 3 Feet High And Rising (pictured above).
The Black Eyed Peas are yet to publicly comment on Badu’s reaction to the Yesterday video, but with Badu taking on the personas of iconic artists in her Honey video and the Peas messing with the sounds of hip hop’s ‘golden age’ (as well as Badu’s music video concept), it’s clear that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
