We’re edging closer to the September release date of Disclosure sophomore LP Caracal and they’re slowly unveiling more and more details, this time giving us an insight into their collaborations with Lorde, Miguel and Australian singer Jordan Rakei.
Back in June, Lorde posted a photo with the British duo, sending the internet into meltdown about what could be. Now, low and behold she’s turned up on the album tracklist on a song called Magnets.
Speaking with Spin, Disclosure’s Howard and Guy Lawrence said they didn’t know that Lorde posted the image. “We usually say, “Don’t post anything” because we like to keep things a surprise, plus then if it doesn’t come to anything, no one is disappointed,” Guy said.
“That was a sneaky one.”
As for the collaboration, it’s the shortest Disclosure song ever but it sounds like it’s going to be killer. “She was involved with every aspect of the song as opposed to just doing the lyrics and melodies and then leaving the rest to us,” said Guy.
“The best thing about it is its simplicity. It’s just a load of tribal drums.”
Lorde isn’t the only person the duo have plucked from this side of the pond. There’s also an Australian singer on the record, Jordan Rakei, who’s from Brisbane. Disclosure have labelled him “a white D’Angelo,” and were introduced to him through a friend who travelled Australia and heard Rakei singing in a bar. He bought the EP and sent it to Guy who loved it.
As it turns out, Rakei had a UK passport and has since moved to London. Two weeks after moving there he got in the studio with Disclosure and wrote Masterpiece.
“We sat and spoke music with him for like an hour and a half before we started writing anything, just talking about a lot of jazz,” said Howard.
“We didn’t know if he was going to be a good writer or anything because there is nothing online about him, no way of finding out if he had written all these songs himself or if he produced them or what. So we just got in the studio almost on a whim, hoping he’d be good. He was.”
Disclosure’s Caracal is out 25th September and also features songs with The Weeknd, Miguel and Sam Smith. The duo will be here previewing songs off it over New Years at Falls Festival in Byron Bay, Lorne and Marion Bay and then Southbound in WA.
NOTE: This story has been amended. Caracal‘s release date is 25th September not 6th September as previously written.
