After its listeners voted overwhelmingly that the ’90s was “the greatest decade in music”, the ABC‘s digital radio station Double J has announced it is going back to that very decade this September.
Following in the footsteps of the ABC‘s music program Rage — which did a similar thing last year — Double J will begin its blast from the past on Thursday, 6th September, with more than a few scratched CDs’ worth of ’90s tunes.
During the month, the station will be blasting ’90s tracks from Thursday night through to Sunday night, leaving us riding a wave of ’90s nostalgia come Monday morning.
Double J will also be featuring ’90s-themed J Files segments about bands like Powderfinger and Radiohead, Classic Albums from acts like Cypress Hill and Jamiroquai, and Live At The Wireless recordings from the likes of Silverchair at Homebake, Sonic Youth a Big Day Out and Pearl Jam at Flinders Park Tennis Centre.
There will also be a countdown of the “50 Best Australian Albums of the ’90s” from 12pm on Saturday, 15th September, which is sure to be contentious.
Killing Heidi frontwoman Ella Hooper will also be Artist in Residence for the month.
“Sometimes, to appreciate the present, it helps to reflect on the past,” says Double J Music Editor Dan Condon.
“When that past is as culturally rich as the ’90s was, that becomes an absolute pleasure.”
