Eagles Of Death Metal have performed their first headline set in Paris since the terrorist attack at the city’s Bataclan theatre in November. Footage of the concert has emerged online, including the emotional moment when the group’s co-founders Josh Homme and Jesse Hughes embraced on stage.
Performing at Paris’ L’Olympia venue on Tuesday night, 16th February, EODM knocked out a 20-song set (with Homme on drums) for around 2,800 fans, including 900 survivors and relatives of those killed at the Bataclan. The set even included a cover of the Rolling Stones’ Brown Sugar.
Since the concert, the band has posted a statement to Facebook saying, “We love you so, so hard, Paris. Thank you all for being there with us. One of the most special shows — and days — of our lives.” Catch footage from the show, below.
As CNN reports, EDOM stopped to ask for a moment’s silence during their set, and did not perform the song Kiss The Devil, which they were performing when the terrorist attack began in November. Homme wasn’t performing with the band during the attack.
The Guardian reports that soldiers, armed police and psychologists were set to be on hand for last night’s concert, which some survivors of the November attack refused to attend.
Three months on from the Paris attacks which killed a total of 130 people and injured another 350, around 40 individuals are still in hospital, while over 1,000 people have received state psychological support.
EODM’s Jesse Hughes spoke up in favour of gun ownership this week, saying that his experience of the Bataclan Theatre attack has convinced him that “until nobody has guns everybody has to have them”. Earlier this month, the operators of the Bataclan Theatre announced plans to reopen the venue later this year.
In December 2015, EODM performed with U2 at the end of their concert in Paris, which was filmed and later released as the U2: iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE: Live in Paris concert film.
EODM will arrive in Australia in March for Bluesfest 2016 and a handful of sideshows.
