Back in June, British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran was facing a a $20 million lawsuit for allegedly stealing significant parts of a song from a UK X-Factor winner.
Now he’s been hit with more claims, once again for alleged copyright infringement. Sheeran is alleged to have ripped off distinctive elements of Marvin Gaye‘s Let’s Get It On and used them in his Grammy-winning tune Thinking Out Loud.
The heirs of Ed Townsend – who co-wrote the song with Gaye – are claiming that Sheeran’s song is significantly made up of core melodic and rhythmic elements that were a central part of Let’s Get It On, reports Reuters.
“The defendants copied the ‘heart’ of Let’s and repeated it continuously throughout Thinking,” the lawsuit says. “The melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic compositions of Thinking are substantially and/or strikingly similar to the drum composition of Let’s.”
Gaye’s family has been successful in similar past lawsuit, gaining reparations of $7.4 million after suing Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams over copyright infringement for their song Blurred Lines.
