A Russian parents’ organisation have written an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, requesting the leader cancel a planned concert by rock legend Elton John, over concerns that the entertainer will violate Russia’s ban on “homosexual propaganda.”
The group, made up of parents living in the central Ural region of Russia, a remote area that sits on the Euro-Asian border, stated in the letter that they fear “The singer intends to come out in support of local sodomites and break the current Russian law, directed at protecting children.” Announced earlier this year, Russia’s anti-gay laws ban the “promotion” of “non-traditional sexual relations” among minors.
Sir Elton claimed he wanted to perform in Russia to show solidarity with their gay community, saying “As a gay man, I can’t leave those people on their own without going over there and supporting them. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I’ve got to go.” In a recent interview with The Guardian, the performer discussed engaging in sex on a Moscow rooftop with his translator while touring the Soviet Union in 1979.
The Russian laws have been the subject of harsh criticism from the international community, inspiring many to call for a boycott on Russia’s hosting of the 2014 Winter Olympics. Both Madonna and Lady Gaga criticised the legislation during their respective St. Petersburg concerts, which led to a government review of Russia’s visa processing for performers. Singer Cher turned down an offer to perform at the 2014 winter games, calling the decision a “no brainer”.
Sir Elton is scheduled to perform in Moscow on 6th December and in Kazan on 7th December.
