Matt Sorum, former drummer with iconic rock band Guns N’ Roses has called out Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters for their lack of “danger”, labeling their live shows predictable.
Currently touring with Kings Of Chaos, the supergroup which features fellow former gunner Duff McKagan and ex-Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach, Sorum made the comments in an interview with Ultimate Classic Rock.
Speaking of the Foo’s he said “I love Dave Grohl, don’t get me wrong. But he’s a drummer who got out front with a guitar. Is there any danger in it? Not really.” Going on, he elaborated on what was missing from the Foos show.
“If you go to a Foo Fighters show, you’re gonna see a band play their set, and everything is gonna go down nice, and he’ll thank the crowd, and everyone’s gonna go home and go ‘Wow, that was a really nice rock ‘n’ roll show’. Not everything went perfect in any of the bands I’ve been in, but I know one thing: People on their way home were going ‘Holy shit, what was that?'”
It wasn’t just Grohl and the Foos he targeted though, with Sorum saying he feels a lot of today’s bands are missing the rock ‘n’ roll spirit.
“A lot of the bands that are coming out now, you don’t really hear those kinds of powerful voices… You know, I see bands with lead singers who are really nice. Squeaky clean. And I really don’t feel I’m getting that wild, rock ‘n’ roll sensibility that I want.”
Taking about his own band however, Sorum was much more positive, comparing Kings Of Chaos frontman Sebastian Bach to his former Guns N’ Roses singer Axl Rose. “They’re both powerhouses” he said, before adding that “I think it’s a bit of a lost art form.”
The comments come as rumours that the classic Guns N’ Roses’ line-up will be reforming, some fellow musicians even threatening to quit music in tribute if they do, although Sorum refused to comment on whether that was a possibility. This is in line with the rest of the band, with Slash also declining to comment when recently asked about the rumours.
Meanwhile in camp Foo Fighters, their website has just been turned into a countdown clock, although no word yet on what the clock is counting down to. Fans have suggested it might be the release of season two of Sonic Highways, although for all we know it might be counting down to when Dave Grohl has his cast removed.
