Raucous Melbourne 10-piece Sex On Toast are bringing their retro-tinged, lyrically-dense and varied sound to 2016, in the form of brand new EP, Ready, which Music Feeds is pumped to premiere for you in full right here!
Off the back of wowing the industry at BIGSOUND 2015 and a tidy residency at the Gaso, the Toasties are set to bring the sex to you once more, with a genre-spinning new EP which injects modern pop-rock with sprinkles of 70s and 80s and more.
To continue to gee up the excitement ahead of its release this Friday April 1st, we got the band to give us a track-by-track rundown of what to expect. Check it out and give the EP a spin below!
Oh Loretta
Inspired by Steely Dan, Frank Zappa and the Gap Band’s Outstanding, Party Funk Tracks From the early 80’s and their blue-eyed soul counterparts. The use of the Yamaha CP-70 is a big nod to an era where the electro-acoustic piano was a staple of hit songs in both the Funk R&B and AOR worlds. It’s lyrics oscillate between undying love for a girl named Loretta, and then suddenly another girl called Rebecca, poking fun of the traditional love song form.
Give it To Me
This track takes a lot of inspiration from some of the hard rock tracks on Prince’s self-titled album, with elements of Chicago’s brass. It’s also the first track of many on Ready to feature a blistering guitar solo from lead guitarist Louis King. There is a guest vocal from Allysha Joy that references 70’s and 80’s divas Chaka Khan and Teena Marie.
Hold My Love Part 2
This is an alternate arrangement of our second single Hold My Love as a shuffle, based feel-wise on Stevie Wonder’s Isn’t She Lovely, Steely Dans Reelin’ in the Years with some percussion and piano elements borrowed from Phil Spector’s My Christmas Gift to You. It’s a 6/4 re-arrangement of the original 4/4 with a bunch of odd bars. It also features Louis King on guitar.
Doubt
Doubt came together as a New Orleans infused and piano driven number, the chorus has been described as being similar to Queen or Journey but actually owes much to Frank Zappa especially in the early 80’s You Are What You Is Era. It’s the first Sex on Toast track to feature Johnny Bassoon on an extended bassoon solo, which is also inspired by the music of Zappa, & other orchestral influences. It’s also inspired by Little Feat, the Doobie Brothers and Brian Wilson.
Potential Sexy (Ricky Version)
The final track marks a return of the CP-70 and is a slower arrangement of an earlier song from our debut album. It also once again inspired feel-wise by Gap Band’s Outstanding. The similarity of feel between this and Loretta bookends the record.
The ending is a nod to the three part harmonies of the late 60’s, early 70’s like Crosby Stills and Nash with a meloncholic edge as a juxtaposition to rather silly lyrics.’
