Michael Jackson fan Vera Serova is suing the late king of pop’s record label Sony and the co-executor of the singer’s estate claiming Jackson does not appear on all the tracks of his 2010 posthumous release Michael. Serova filed the suit in Superior Court in LA County on Thursday.
As The Wrap reports, the plaintiff is particularly critical of the tracks Breaking News, Monster, and Keep Your Head Up, and claims that, after hiring and consulting with an audio expert who analysed the album, it is highly unlikely that it was Jackson who sung those three tracks. Serova, who bought the LP in 2011, claims Sony guaranteed on the album cover that all tracks were sung by Jackson.
Furthermore, Serova claims that “several members of Jackson’s family” have disputed the authenticity of Sony’s claim. According to NME, a video that surfaced in 2012 has Jackson’s daughter Paris claiming the album is a fake and the vocals were recorded by singer Jason Malachi.
“It’s not him. The whole album isn’t even him,” she reportedly said during a conversation filmed in 2010 whilst listening to the posthumous release. “Go online, go on YouTube and look up Jason Malachi. That’s him. I should know if it’s him or not because he would sing to me all the time.”
The angry fan is aiming for a class action suit, meaning that if her case proves successful, anyone else who purchased the album would also be able to claim compensation. However, the lawyer for Jackson’s estate has previously gone on record insisting the vocals on the LP are Jackson’s.
