Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, who plays in a band with former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, has labeled KISS bassist and walking ego Gene Simmons‘ assertion that Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse aren’t music “icons” as “nonsense.”
Last week, Simmons stirred controversy when he told radio interviewers that due to their less than copious output, Cobain and Winehouse do not constitute icons, during a conversation about iconic, larger-than-life bands, saying:
“Kurt Cobain – no, that’s one or two records, that’s not enough. Amy Winehouse – that’s one or two records, that’s not enough. What, just ’cause you died that makes you an icon? No, no.”
Hawkins has now responded to Simmons’ comments, after prodding by US tabloid TMZ, labelling them as “nonsense.” First responding with a simple “Fuck that!” Hawkins added that the two artists were indeed icons, “whatever that means…especially Nirvana.”
During the interview Simmons also claimed, “There won’t be another Beatles or another Prince or another Kiss because there isn’t that support system, there’s no record companies because kids have decided they can download and fileshare and bypass paying the artists…”
