Sydney stalwart Genevieve Maynard returns with her new album, The Hollow Way. Her third solo release since the disbanding of local legend Stella One Eleven, The Hollow Way is her first collaboration with her band The Tallboys, its atmospheric spaciousness and high-end production values sending it sailing through the sea of acoustic alt-rock.
Recorded and produced by Genevieve herself at her Revolution Studios in Alexandria Sydney, The Hollow Way is a further realisation of her songwriting talent. Weaving tales of love, loss, joy and heartbreak, the album leads you down a road of emotional discovery, delivering stories that are noticeably personal to Maynard yet easily impart themselves upon the listener. This six-piece band, led, arranged and produced by Maynard, have created a sound that’s at once powerful and controlled, yet achingly intimate. Exploring life’s darker pathways through seductive melodies and dream-like textures, the twelve songs move from tales of survival in the soulful ‘Ripped’, to unexpected happiness in the alt-country ‘Long Gone’.
Having a long relationship with Australian music scene through her involvements in seminal 90s bands stella one eleven and Bughouse, Genevieve then took on the solo-route, releasing two albums and two EP’s to critical acclaim and national airplay. Her debut album Ghost Notes (2002) spent over 25 weeks in the independent AIR charts and was nominated by Rolling Stone as one of the top ten international debut albums in their end-of-year issue.
A desire to continue her explorations of the alt. country genre lead to the formation of the Tallboys, featuring long-time collaborator Richard Anderson (ex Swirl, Genevieve Maynard band) on piano, Stephen Campbell (Bughouse) on guitar, Geoff Martin (Bow Campbells’ Bloody Hell, The Impossibles) on bass, Bryce Jacobs (Josh Pyke) on lap steel and Brian Cachia (stella one eleven, the Margeritas) on drums.
Owning and managing Revolution Studios in Sydney’s inner-west, Genevieve is the studio-mind behind, amongst others, bluejuice’s debut album “Problems” (who came in at number 11 in jjj’s Hottest 100 with ‘Vitriol’ and won the Red Bull AMP award), FisherKing (winners of jjj Unearthed FUSE Festival Competition), and Melanie Horsnell. Having also produced and engineered National Top 20 and 100 charting releases for stella one eleven, she brings that same finesse to The Hollow Way, matching musical imagery with superb sonic craftsmanship.
To mark the release of her new album, Genevieve and The Tallboys will be performing a series of shows in the next few months, beginning with the launch at The Vanguard in Newtown.
