Ghost fans: your dark prayers have been answered by the satanic clergy, with the band confirming that new material is on the way.
Speaking with Metal Wani (via Noisecreep), a Nameless Ghoul unmasked some new details about the Swedish heavy metal church’s fourth LP, the follow-up to 2015’s epic Meliora, confirming that they’ll be hitting the studio in August of this year to begin the recording process.
“The ideas for the new record will be ‘darker’ because it’s thematically set in a darker setting. Meliora was supposed to reflect some sort of utopia / dystopia of modern society, where this new one is gonna be a little bit more apocalyptic in a way, a little bit more back to medieval times,” the Ghoul explains.
“The idea for this new album is to combine… So, where it’s a record drowned and surrounded and drenched in death, it’s going to be a record about survival,” he continues. “Constantly working with those sort of polar sort of elements is also a difference I guess between… If you find a black metal record that is about the plague and the death you will have only death, everything just is black and everything just ends black.”
However, while the album will indeed be “darker”, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be “heavier”, with the Nameless Ghoul expressing uncertainty about just how heavy the band’s new songs will be.
“Obviously we do have melody and we do have songs that are not so heavy, so from my point of view, from where I’m sitting knowing of a little bit of material coming in, it’s going to be both,” he adds. “It’s gonna have everything from heavy crushing metal to big ballady anthems.”
It comes after Ghost, who last toured Australia during the Big Day Out’s final run in 2014, confirmed that they’d be releasing some kind of new LP this year.
Since hinting at a slot at the now-axed Soundwave festival in 2016, the band have revealed that they won’t be heading Down Under until after they’ve finished recording their new disc.
Maybe if you pray extra hard, you’ll be able to catch them live again Down Under in 2018.
