Already announced as part of the Sydney Festival program, L.A. by way of Philadelphia duo Girlpool have just announced a run of headline shows in Melbourne and Brisbane in January.
Garnering plenty of attention for their stripped back minimalist punk sound, the duo consisting of guitarist/singer Cleo Tucker and bassist/singer Harmony Tividad first bonded over the lack of female voices in the DIY punk music scene. “It’s like people expect that girls are not as musically competent,” Tividad told L.A. Weekly. “I was sick of being shoved to the side.”
Using nothing more than bass, guitar and vocal harmonies, the band put an emphasis on lyrics and honesty. Taking on a wide array of subject matter, from awareness and respect of political and social issues to the more day-to-day, such as going to see a show on your own, Tucker and Tividad have charmed crowds from SXSW to CMJ with their raw bare bones compositions.
Having signed to Wichita Recordings, with their debut album Before The World Was Big released in June, the band have been praised by critics with the likes of AllMusic hailing the album for its “risky and appealingly human songs,” whilst NME exclaimed “this brilliant half-hour of punky Americana is a chance to read the journals of the coolest kids in town.”
