Local bookmakers clearly believe that Gotye is a damn-good chance to become the first Australian male to win Record of The Year at tomorrow’s Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.
Update: Gotye wins ‘Record Of The Year’ at the Grammys! Full list of Grammy Award 2013 winners are here
Sportsbet has installed the Melbourne musician at a $1.80 favourite to take out the prestigious gong for his all-conquering track, Somebody That I Used to Know (feat. Kimbra). The award was last won by an Australian in 1975 by Olivia Newton-John and her track I Honestly Love You.
News Limited reports that if successful tomorrow, Gotye will join the likes of Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, The Eagles, Billy Joel, U2, Coldplay, and Eric Clapton on the award’s honour roll.
Awards critics are also on Gotye’s side, with Goldderby.com editor David Schnelwar believing that Somebody That I Used to Know‘s high sales in the US are a good omen.
“Somebody That I Used to Know was number one on Billboard’s Hot 100 of 2012 and number one on VH1’s Top 20 of 2012, as was last year’s Record of the Year winner Rolling in the Deep by Adele,” he wrote.
“I predict Somebody That I Used to Know will win Record of the Year.”
Gotye’s most serious threat is Future Music Festival-bound Fun., who are at $3.00 with their breakout hit We Are Young. Taylor Swift, The Black Keys, Kelly Clarkson, and Frank Ocean are also in contention for the award.
Gotye is also in the running for two other awards on the night – Best Pop Duo/Group Performance (against Florence and the Machine, LMFAO and Maroon 5) and Best Alternative Album (against Fiona Apple, Tom Waits and Bjork).
The Grammys take place from Midday tomorrow (AEST) at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
