Musician Grimes and tech billionaire Elon Musk have revealed that their second child, Exa Dark Sideræl Musk, was born in December 2021.
The couple had kept the birth of Y secret, but Grimes broke the news in an interview with Vanity Fair‘s Devin Gordon. Exa Dark Sideræl Musk – referred to by Grimes as “Y” – is the couple’s second child and first daughter. Their son, X Æ A-12, was born in May 2020. Grimes refers to her son as X A.I. Archangel, or X for short.
The announcement of Y’s birth is doubly surprising given the indications that Grimes and Musk had split up. Musk all but confirmed this to be true in a Time interview last year. “Grimes and I are, I’d say, probably semi-separated,” he said.
But Grimes told Vanity Fair they’re still together, just pursuing a different relationship structure. “I would probably refer to him as my boyfriend, but we’re very fluid,” she said “We live in separate houses. We’re best friends. We see each other all the time…. We just have our own thing going on, and I don’t expect other people to understand it.”
However, Grimes tweeted in response to the article’s publication, writing, “Me and E have broken up *again* since the writing of this article haha, but he’s my best friend and the love of my life.”
Exa Dark Sideræl Musk was born via surrogate, a decision informed by the complications Grimes faced when pregnant with x. “I hemorrhaged. It was scary,” she said. Grimes released the single ‘Player Of Games’ in December 2021. The song is expected to appear on the musician’s upcoming album, Book 1, due later this year.
