Canadian electro-popper Grimes, aka Clare Boucher, is two-fifths done on her next record, the follow-up to 2012’s Visions.
If you were wondering where that oddly specific fraction came from, the lady herself has been kind enough to explain, telling Billboard in a pre-Coachella interview, “I’m probably like two-fifths done. I know that’s a weird number. I’m more than one-third but less than two-thirds, but I’m not one-half but I’m more than one-quarter.”
The 25-year-old synth prodigy described the project as being more experimental than the last. She cited Paramore and Enya as influences on the as-yet-unnamed album and said that Nine Inch Nails set the standard she wants in terms of production quality:
I’m really trying to have it sound professional. As a producer, I’m trying to challenge myself to just make something that is of a professional quality – not necessarily pop music, but maybe in the sense that Nine Inch Nails is professional quality.
But professional doesn’t mean the Vancouver native will be taking recording to a fancy studio. She works in her bedroom but is in the process of building a studio in her own home, saying that it’s cheaper for her to do so than to rent a studio. She intends to produce the record herself but will leave mixing duties to outside help.
Grimes hopes to release her fourth studio album this spring.
