One of Australia’s most respected recording artists, Gurrumul, is to embark on only his second national tour.
The multi-instrumentalist takes to the road in support of his second album Rrakala. The tour takes place over August and September, starting in Hobart on August 24. Gurrumul, full name Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, will play in all major cities and winds up on September 7 in Melbourne. Support comes from Tasmania’s Dewayne Everettsmith.
Musical partner Michael Hohnen said, “Gurrumul and I have been talking about the best way of presenting a special concert to a larger audience and the challenges of this. On Rrakala Gurrumul plays drums, electric and acoustic guitars and grand piano. I thought it was a touching but also a more varied performance at Bluesfest in Byron recently where some 8000 people simply stood, mesmerised, and listened for the entire hour, as if we were playing in their collective lounge room. This was a show where we had some extra people play with him – he loves playing with musicians backing him up.”
Tickets go on sale on June 1, while more information can be found at gurrumal.com. Rrakala came out in April, the follow up to his self-titled first album.
