Hear Courtney Barnett’s New Jack White-Produced Single ‘Boxing Day Blues (Revisited)’

Melbourne singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett‘s latest collab with Jack White has finally hit our ears, and it’s the deceptively dark new single Boxing Day Blues (Revisited).

Barnett’s new track, which was produced by White for his label Third Man Records, is a sort of epilogue for Boxing Day Blues, the final song on her debut album Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit.

Boxing Day Blues (Revisited) has a relaxed and slightly jaunty vibe, but a dark undercurrent which pours out in lyrics such as, “Why you so calm? / I wanna shout / I wanna rip my goddamn throat out.” It’s like someone saying they’re ‘okay’ even if deep down they’re really just losing their shit.

Boxing Day Blues (Revisited) has been released alongside Barnett’s new cover of Shivers, a track written by Rowland S. Howard and first recorded by Aussie post-punk outfit The Boys Next Door, who later became The Birthday Party.

Both Boxing Day Blues (Revisited) and Barnett’s cover of Shivers are available to stream and download, with 7″ vinyl copies available through the Third Man Records website.

Barnett is set to perform at Falls Festival and Southbound over New Year’s, before kicking off her national theatre tour with Cloud Control in January.
