The Vines frontman Craig Nicholls has teamed up with Nick Littlemore of PNAU and Empire Of The Sun on new project White Shadows, which has now shared its dancey debut single Give Up Give Out Give In.
Give Up Give Out Give In (below) was premiered by triple j’s Richard Kingsmill last night, and also features the production chops of Nick Littlemore’s brother Sam Littlemore, aka Sam La More. The track sees a quiet string intro fade into a dance beat topped by some twisted vocal melodies from Nicholls, before a pretty impressive hook takes hold. It’s a definite sidestep from Nicholls’ typically raucous style, but the production holds up well.
Explaining the origins of the collaboration, Kingsmill said Nicholls wrote “a collection of songs which he thought weren’t really the garage rock stuff The Vines have been known for since 2000”. He added that Nicholls tossed around the idea of doing an acoustic solo album with the material, but later decided to experiment on the songs with the Littlemore brothers.
Nick Littlemore told V Music in August 2012 that he had finished writing an album with Nicholls, under the name White Shadows.
Other details surrounding the album are yet to come to light, but it appears it might include a performance from Midnight Oil guitarist Jim Moginie, whose website notes that he has played on an upcoming record from Nick Littlemore and Craig Nicholls.
The Vines released their latest album Wicked Nature in September 2014, featuring a brand-new lineup including Tim John and Lachlan West of The Griswolds, which made its live debut in October.
