Hear Panic! At The Disco Get Their Frank Sinatra On In New Single 'Death Of A Bachelor'

It’s been a while since we’ve heard a peep from Panic! At The Disco, but that’s because frontman Brendon Urie has been in the studio putting the finishing touches on his fifth studio LP under the Panic! monicker. And now, we’ve got a fresh taste of what the forthcoming disc has to offer via new single, Death Of A Bachelor.

Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz premiered the brand spanker overnight on his show on Apple’s Beats1 Radio, with Urie telling him the tune was inspired by his own marriage (and subsequent death-of-bachelordom) and sounds a bit like “Beyoncé and Sinatra made a song together”.

It’s a pretty good description for a tune that both swings and pops, combining Sinatra-style old world crooning with some funky Maroon 5-ish falsetto and a dancey beat.

“Frank Sinatra turns 100 this year,” Urie posted on Instagram. “I attach his music to so many memories: opening presents on Christmas day, my grandparents teaching the rest of the family to swing dance, watching Who Framed Roger Rabbit with my siblings (Sinatra makes a cameo in the form of a cartoon sword singing Witchcraft).

“His music has been a major player in the soundtrack of my life. So it’s only right that I return the favor and/or pay it forward,” he continued. “I wrote a new album this year and even in the few songs that don’t sound remotely similar to any of his music I still felt his influence in the writing and the need to relate so personally to each song.

“Death Of A Bachelor is very important to me. It expresses the bittersweet (but mostly sweet) end of an era. A look back at a part of my life now deceased. An It’s A Wonderful Life-esque look into a possibly different future. But mostly an appreciation for the present.”

The song will feature on Panic’s as-yet untitled new album, which Urie has told Gigwise is basically good to go.

“It’s done. It’s mixed, it just needs mastering where they compress the shit out of it so it can go on radio and be loud as fuck,” he said. “Hopefully by the end of this year, but really that’s up to the label.

“I have no idea when they want to put it out. I’m saying end of this year, hoping that I force their hand and make them fucking put it out. I really have no idea.”

Urie also described the LP, which he wrote solo following the departure of founding Panic! At The Disco drummer Spencer Smith earlier this year, as being “like if a crooner smoked a lot of weed and screamed at the top of his lungs”.
