Helen Reddy, the iconic Australian singer behind 1972’s ‘I Am Woman’ who passed away last year aged 78, will be honoured with a prestigious prize at this year’s APRA Music Awards ceremony.
Reddy will posthumously be one of two recipients of the Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services to Australian Music at this year’s event in April. Reddy was originally meant to receive the honour last year, before the pandemic saw the Awards’ format change to a condensed digital ceremony.
“I am so honoured to be accepting The Ted Albert Award on behalf of my mother who devoted her life and career to equal rights for all people,” commented Reddy’s daughter, Traci Donat, in a statement.“In honouring her you honour not just her music but also what she stood for. We couldn’t be more deeply moved and grateful.”
Reddy died in September of 2020 in Los Angeles. At the most recent ARIA Awards ceremony in December, an all-star lineup of female Australian artists including Marcia Hines, Delta Goodrem, Amy Shark and Tones and I paid tribute to Reddy with a performance of ‘I Am Woman’.
This year’s APRA Music Awards ceremony is set to take place at the ICC Grand Ballroom in Sydney on Wednesday, 28th April. The ceremony will be hosted by Julia Zemiro, Ziggy Ramo and Georgia Mooney, with musical direction from PJ Harding.
In addition, Organisers have amended one of the Awards’ categories – Most Performed Urban Work will be replaced with two new categories, Most Performed Hip Hop/Rap Work and Most Performed R&B/Soul Work.
Nominees for all awards will be announced on Thursday, 25th March.
